Rising star wins studio residency masterclass

Navigating the music industry has never been easy, so supporting grass roots musicians was a subject that was close to Amy Winehouse. Hot off the heels of StudioCanal’s Amy Winehouse film, Back to Black, we took up the reigns to uncover a star in the making.
The event
In celebration of the highly anticipated feature film BACK TO BLACK, in cinemas 12th April, Bang & Olufsen partnered with STUDIOCANAL to launch a competition to kickstart the artistic journey of one lucky singer-songwriter.
With 170 music entries received in less than two weeks, April 8-19, the UK based competition proved popular with a high standard of entry. The entries were shortlisted to a top ten, before the panel of judges including Back to Black film director Sam Taylor-Johnson, to home in on just three music artists, to take part in the live final on May 1st, hosted at Bang & Olufsen of Mayfair.
The highly anticipated event saw three finalists go head-to-head, each performing their original piece of music to an audience whilst under the watchful eyes (and ears) of our judges, consisting of; Stuart Hawkes, Mastering Engineer at Metropolis Studios and Imogen Williams, Deputy Chair of the Songwriter Council at The Ivors Academy.
The winner
Originally from the Midlands, Jordan Mistry who now lives in London grew up in a family with funk, soul and Motown influences from his parents. ‘My earliest memories are being in the living room listening to the greats like; Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, The Temptations.’
"This is HUGE! These things don't happen too often! It is honestly a dream come true to complete my music with the help of industry professionals. I will use this chance to launch myself as an artist, taking on as much knowledge and advice to help me become a paid, working musician. I’m invested in my music and have worked hard to get here, so it will be a proud day to release my music for the world to enjoy.”
