The speaker phone – natural speech reproduction
The very compact design of BeoCom 5 is of course a challenge when you wish to achieve excellent sound performance. Also having both handset and hands-free conversation set different requirements to the sound performance, as the acoustic performance when using the handset should be optimised to listening, whereas when using the phone in hands-free, it should be optimised for speech.
We have applied our acoustic learnings in the design for handset conversation. For the hands-free option, we had various options. Some phone manufacturers allow speech in one direction at the time for hands free communication, which means that when one person is talking the other cannot speak. In BeoCom 5 we choose to go for a so-called full-duplex solution, which we believe gives a better and more natural experience. Here you get closer to a more natural dialogue situation with a sensation of breath, space, presence of the person in the other end, rather than cutting off/muting completely. This of course is a challenge acoustically, as you have to adjust on many surrounding parameters and remove unnecessary and disturbing noise.
The materials used for the hands-free speaker unit also has an acoustic impact. We have carefully selected materials that are so called “dead” materials that have no ressonance in themselves. The loudspeaker design inside is based on a closed box principle that gives maximum bass and no disturbing leakage. So the overall experience is a sensation of robustness and quality.
