Media handling with BeoMedia 1 - organise your content

When you have BeoMedia 1 as part of your setup, you can listen to music or watch photos/video clips on your PC, on BeoMedia 1 or in both locations. Fortunately, files can easily and quickly be moved from place to place, and often it is an advantage to keep copies in both locations.

When you have copied an audio CD, the music is available on BeoMedia 1, if you have set the configuration to “Copy to BeoMedia 1”. However, if you have configured your system to store CDs locally on your PC (refer to ‘Basic settings’) you must transfer the music to BeoMedia 1, in order to access it via your television. The same applies for photos or video clips you have imported in BeoPlayer/BeoPort.

Icons in front of your material tell you where the items are located (the icons are only available when your computer is connected to BeoMedia 1. Be aware also, that the many options described below are drastically limited if your BeoMedia 1 is not available):

means that the item is placed on your PC.

means that the item is placed on BeoMedia 1.

means that there is a copy both on your PC and on BeoMedia 1.

These icons also show you where the content of a collection of items is located. For example a Folder, a Playlist or a Group. If the items in a collection have no common location, then there will be no location icon showed, the space will simply be blank.

To transfer media items, you select the item or group of items (such as a Playlist) in N.MUSIC, N.RADIO (only Playlist view) or PHOTO and click the right mouse button, a menu appears listen the options you have:

Copy to BeoMedia 1:   You copy the item(s) or group(s) from your PC to BeoMedia 1.

Remove: If you don’t want a file to appear in the lists, you can choose to remove it. This will move the item to the ‘Removed view*’, where you can always restore it later if you wish to.
Restore: In the Removed view, right-click an item and you can choose to restore it to its original position.

*You can use the ’Removed view’ as your miscellaneous list – for items you don’t know where to place at the moment, or for items you may want to delete all together at a later point in time. You can always restore an item to get it back into your lists.

When you are transferring files you can follow the process by looking at the Bang & Olufsen icon in the taskbar. For the transfer to function, your PC must be in contact with BeoMedia 1. If there is contact, you can see that the Bang & Olufsen icon is black:

If, on the other hand, there is no contact between your PC and BeoMedia 1, the icon turns grey:

You must then restore the contact between your PC and BeoMedia 1. Right-click on the icon, and select ‘Connect to BeoMedia 1’.

While a transfer is in progress, the Bang & Olufsen icon is red:

You can also follow the copy progress by watching the box around each item number turn red as they are copied to the new location. In addition, you can get more information about the copy process by moving the mouse over the icon: “BeoPlayer <> BeoMedia 1" or "BeoPort <-> BeoMedia 1" : indicates that items on your PC and BeoMedia 1 is being synchronised.

"N.MUSIC <-> BeoMedia 1": indicates the copy progress of N.MUSIC items between your PC and BeoMedia 1.

"PHOTO <-> BeoMedia 1": indicates the copy progress of PHOTO items between your PC and BeoMedia 1.

You can cancel these activities at any time by right-clicking the Bang & Olufsen icon and select the cancellation option under 'Activity', as shown below.

(The following menu options are only available in the Playlist view in N.MUSIC, PHOTO and N.RADIO):

Remove from BeoMedia 1:   You remove the playlist(s) from BeoMedia 1.
Remove from BeoPlayer/BeoPort: You remove the playlist(s) from BeoPlayer/BeoPort.
Remove from both: You remove the playlist(s) from BeoPlayer/BeoPort and BeoMedia 1 – the playlist(s) is no longer available.
Rename: You change the name of the playlist.

Note: Files are not deleted by any of the above operations, as playlists are only representations of files that are physically placed in other locations.
We recommend that you always keep a copy of your music files and photos either on your PC or a storage media (such as a portable hard disk).

More about playlists:

When you create a playlist, you can choose three different locations for it (if BeoMedia connection is available); locally on your PC, on BeoMedia 1 or in both locations. If you add an item from your PC to a playlist on BeoMedia 1 the new item will automatically be copied to BeoMedia 1 to ensure playability. Likewise, if you add an item from BeoMedia 1 to a playlist on your PC this item will be copied to the PC.

Drag and drop

When material is dragged from the explorer into your BeoPlayer/BeoPort, you can select the location you want the items to be shown in, either:

Show in BeoPlayer:  The material can be seen in BeoPlayer/BeoPort (this is in fact a link, as the item is still physically placed in its original location.
Copy to BeoMedia 1:  The material is copied to BeoMedia 1 (and still exists in the original location too).
Show & Copy:  The material is copied to BeoMedia 1and a link will also be shown in BeoPlayer/BeoPort.

Synchronise files

If you make changes in your playlists either on your PC, or from your television when BeoMedia 1 is not connected to your PC, you need to know how this change will be updated, once you reconnect: Any change made on either location will automatically be copied to the other location so that you can access them from your TV and your PC. However, if you have made changes on both locations and then reconnect, the version stored on your PC locally will overwrite the one stored in BeoMedia 1. An example of this could be – you alter a photo using software on your PC, and you alter the same photo in BeoMedia 1 rotating it. You now have no original, and once you reconnect the version you altered on the PC will be stored in both locations.

You can synchronise files between your PC and BeoMedia 1 at any time. Simply right-click on the Bang & Olufsen icon and select “Start BeoPlayer <-> BeoMedia 1”. This is useful for example in the above mentioned instance where a photo has been changed in an Image processor.
