YOU DANCE FROM THE HEART.

This is the idea put forth in a new short film by Bang & Olufsen, starring Nikolaj Hübbe. As Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet, Nikolaj ponders the forces that clash and coalesce in a performance, to help lift his feet off the ground.

Sounds that fill a concert hall never really leave it. They linger behind in the musty wood and chipped paint, like a ghost lurking in the shadows. Sometimes a performance needs to be staged in the right way, to make its point.

Nikolaj Hübbe remarks on one performance of Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements at the old Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. “The piece features these turbulent booms that throbbed across the old oak stage, making my body tremble,” says Nikolaj.

“The strings soared and the bassoon roared, and my ears surrendered to the music. The resonance in that concert hall and the depth of the notes cast a spell on the stage, igniting my dancer’s heart.”

“Ever since that day, I’ve sought out acoustic perfection that echoes deep in the pores. I seek beauty in the form and clarity in the delivery. No matter where I am—at a Russian ballet, or in my living room—the music should help me let go.”
