Five years ago, the CEO of Bang & Olufsen Tue Mantoni, stood in the town of Chamonix, France and watched a 56-year old Italian named Marco Olmo race the Mont Blanc Ultra Trail Run. The 165-kilometre race circles one of Europe’s tallest mountains, through France, Switzerland, Italy, then back to France. It was a day Tue will never forget.
Tall and lanky, with deep lines around his pensive eyes and grey hair peaking out beneath a white hat, Marco was the underdog of the race who—at the 140km mark—took over the lead. He ran in front of his chequered past, shouldering the weight of a tragic childhood, growing up in a poor mountain home with no father. Running was his vengeance against a world that had been unusually cruel to him. That day in 2006, Marco passed 20-year-olds, 30-year-olds, and 40-year-olds; lean French favourites and Americans in fancy shoes.
Marco was determined. And focused. Moving forward through each mile, until it rolled into the next.
