Fernando Alonso on silence, precision, and the moments that stay with you
When Everything Works, Nothing Distracts You.
Fernando Alonso has called more cities home than most people visit in a lifetime. Over the years, he's learned what to leave behind — and what always makes the bag. A conversation about travel, sound, and the moments that don't make the headline.
"You've spent your career moving between circuits, continents, and cultures. What does the ritual of arriving somewhere new feel like to you — and does music play a role in how you settle in?"
You definitely get used to the routine of being somewhere other than home. It is rare that I go somewhere completely new these days because I have raced at many of the circuits before.
"I use music more to be calm , but also give you energy before a session."
"In motorsport, every millisecond of noise carries information — engine notes, tyre sounds, the crowd. Away from the cockpit, how do you think about sound differently? Do you seek silence, or do you seek music?"
I think I seek silence more than anything. Race weekends are already very intense and noisy, so away from the track I value quiet moments.
"You've raced in over 30 countries. Is there a place in the world where the combination of the landscape and what you were listening to created a memory you still carry?"
I always enjoy going to Japan. There is a calmness and respect in the culture and the people that I appreciate very much.
“When you're finally alone — on a flight, in a hotel room, in transit between two worlds — what are you listening to, and what are you trying to feel?"
It depends on the mood and the moment. Sometimes you want something relaxing, sometimes you want more energy. Usually, I am trying to switch off from the racing side as we have such busy schedules and days on the track. I listen to a real mix of music because of this.
"Great engineering, whether in a car or a pair of headphones, is about eliminating everything that shouldn't be there so you can feel everything that should. Does that idea resonate with you?"
Yes, definitely. We work very closely with our engineers and it’s a relationship built on a combination of trust and clear communication. Because of that I have very strong relationships with them. In racing, the best feeling is when everything works naturally and nothing distracts you from what you are trying to do.
Is there an important role that music plays when you're racing from one city to the next? how do you use music differently when you're traveling for races, and when you're traveling for pleasure?
Music can take you away from where you are for a little while, especially with so much travel during the season. On race weekends it is more about focus and preparation. When I travel, it is more relaxed.
