Bang & Olufsen: Sound and Design

A commemorative 100th‑anniversary concept book that, for the first time, reveals the full story of a brand that has continually redefined how the world experiences sound.

Hiroshi Fujiwara

In 2025, the Danish audio brand Bang & Olufsen celebrated its 100th anniversary. This book traces the remarkable heritage the brand has built over the past century, from its beginnings with a radio assembled in a farmhouse to the sound systems powered by today’s most advanced technologies. Inside, readers will find a chronological product catalogue showcasing many of Bang & Olufsen’s most iconic creations, along with a detailed documentary style look at the brand’s 100 year journey. The book also features a special interview with Hiroshi Fujiwara, one of the key figures who helped introduce Bang & Olufsen to Japan in the 1990s. In addition, ten creators and artists with a refined eye for design, including Masamichi Katayama, Hiroshi Nakamura, Ryo Miyoshi, and Kwangho Lee, share their personal reflections on the Bang & Olufsen products they use and admire. Through these voices and beautifully composed photographs that capture Bang & Olufsen products in harmony with everyday living spaces, the book explores the enduring appeal of objects defined by timeless beauty. It also includes rare interviews conducted in Denmark with designers who continue to shape Bang & Olufsen today, including Torsten Valeur, a former apprentice of David Lewis, the designer behind many of the brand’s legendary creations of the 1990s, and Cecilie Manz. Based in Struer, a small town about four hours from Copenhagen, Bang & Olufsen has continued to share its vision with the world for over a century. This book offers a unique opportunity to discover the one of a kind journey of a brand unlike any other.

“I always use wired headphones. Since I work with music production software, I do not use wireless headphones because of latency. These days, most manufacturers are focusing on wireless models, so I am always looking for wired headphones. That also applies to earphones. When I find a product that looks interesting, I often end up buying it. I always listen to music when I am on the move. Today, whether it is music, video, or anything else, headphones and earphones have become essential. As for the Beoplay H100, I use them as they are, without putting them in a case.”

Born in Mie Prefecture, Hiroshi Fujiwara is the founder of fragment design. He works across a wide range of fields, including music production, fashion direction, and music. He began his career as a DJ in the 1980s and has continued to shape the scene from the early days of Tokyo street culture to the present day. He has also collaborated with numerous brands, particularly in the world of fashion.

“This was a time before the internet made everything instantly accessible, when seeing something in person had real meaning. One of the reasons I came to Tokyo was because I wanted to see many different things. When I encountered Bang & Olufsen, I had no prior knowledge of the brand at all. It made a powerful impression on me.”

Born in Okayama Prefecture, Masamichi Katayama is an interior designer and the founder of Wonderwall®. From 2011 to 2026, for the 2025 academic year, he served as a professor in the Department of Scenography, Display and Fashion Design at Musashino Art University. With interior design at the core of his practice, he has worked on projects around the world, spanning architecture, branding for fashion boutiques, hotels, and master planning for large scale commercial facilities. wonder-wall.com

“I want to create objects that become part of people’s everyday lives. In other words, I create things that I would use myself. If something does not work well in my own home, it probably will not work well for others either. Through a process of trial and error, I have designed seven speakers to date.”

After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Cecilie Manz established her own studio in Copenhagen. Born to artist parents, she has been familiar with design, art, and craft since childhood. She has worked on many projects across fields such as furniture, tableware, lighting, and electrical appliances, and has strong ties with Japanese brands. ceciliemanz.com
