Beosound A9

The shape of sound

Beoplay A9 Immersive

Read about how designer, Øivind Alexander Slaatto, talk about finding circles in music, establishing atmospheres made for calm and how the natural world influenced his design for the Beosound A9 speaker. Turn it up.

What was your vision behind the design of the Beosound A9?

With the A9 I wanted to make a timeless classic something which is beautiful from all angles in all times. A9 was inspired by sound and by music. The shape is a circle and the reason why I chose a circle is because the sound travels in circles. The A9 is made out of very few elements which are used as much as possible and crafted in the best materials; high quality wood high quality plastics high quality aluminium and a very good fabric.

How did you integrate functional elements into the A9's design?

Designing the A9 we knew there had to be holes for screws on the front to hold the components together, and because of the changeable cover I wanted to create a product that would also look beautiful underneath.

The pattern creates a unified expression – so all you have to relate to is one thing. We have removed the complexity. Not the other way around. You could call it form and function unified. I also wanted to instil a bit of nature and move away from the more stringent design of the past.

The design is a combination of mathematics and pattern breaks, if you only follow the rules of mathematics, you don’t risk anything and you don’t show humanity.

When the patterns and the rules are broken, that’s when an artist shows personality!

What does simplicity mean to you in design?

We believe that at heart people want to focus on the life without getting distracted by complicated products, services and unnecessary information. We're not afraid of the obvious or even the banal because these qualities are timeless. They will stay appealing. Therefore, we work hard to keep things simple, complexity comes by itself, it requires a master to keep things simple. Danish design really is about to cut into the bone instead of having this bling and blang and ploom and bloom, well, we try to really cut into the core and think what is necessary, what can we take away, and when there is nothing more to take away we know that we have a really essential product. So it's about minimalism but give it a poetic touch, so it's a minimalistic with feelings.

Sound travels in circles, like waves around a stone when it hits the water. Circles defines the grid of everything in this design and the result is obvious, minimalistic and poetic.

How did you design the A9 to adapt to different living spaces?

The A9 is a very flexible design. Most people know it standing on the three wooden legs, but you can also hang it on the wall where it can blend in if you take a fabric with the same color as a background to the wall or you can make it stand out by giving it another maybe contrasting color on the front fabric and the cool thing is they can always later on change their entire appearance of the design by changing the color of the front fabric. In this way, the appearance will change but the circle will always stay a circle and the A9 always stay an A9.
